The Test of Love

Its been a rough three days.

Chloe started a fever yesterday morning. We were all a little surprised, especially since she was perfectly jolly when we woken up. She continued to have fever the rest of the day, with brief journeys back to 37 degrees or so thanks to paracetamol.

By evening, the fever had returned -- big time. I always feel bad when Chloe's sick. Imagine how you feel when you are sick -- and you're an adult, your body can hack it. Kids, well, they cry alot, have no sense of humour, don't eat and put up a Pacquiao-style fight to fend off medicine. Yep, that was Chloe today. She had her moments though where she was all jolly, like after she'd just woken up or when she'd go to our office area in Frisco.

The thing is, when kids are sick, you pretty much forego sleep. Chloe kept getting up on our bed to cuddle with me and mind you, she was pretty hot with the fever (I'm guess it was 39ish degrees) and I couldnt sleep because of all the heat radiating from her. I got up at 4am to give her a sponge bath to try to get her to cool off. I got up at 6 am to give medicine and she put up a pretty good fight before finally taking the medicine.

Chloe was something else this morning with Louie. I left home early to go to Triumph, which meant Louie had to give Chloe her medicines. So as a delaying tactic, Chloe starts asking questions WHILE THE SPOON WITH MEDICINE IS WAITING RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER MOUTH! Here are some funny ones...

  • "What color is the medicine, Daddy?"
  • "Is Mommy afraid of monsters?" (When Louie said no, she then proceed to ask about her Daddy, then Inday, then Lola, then Lolo, etc)

I experienced the same when I tried to give her medicine later on during the day. She would start yapping about colors, asking questions, ANYTHING TO DELAY THE INEVITABLE. I never realized what schemer she was!

The scheming was most obvious this evening. Louie and I came from the gym, thought she was asleep. It turns out she was pretending to sleep at the mere mention of the word "medicine!" Oh my gosh!!! How can she be that smart?!?

So its 11pm and we had just finished the 20-minute question, crying, medicine-taking portion. We were so relieved. She's lying down on the bed all fine and everything. Then Chloe sits up... and all hell breaks loose.

She throws up on the comforter. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! And its not a little vomit mind you, its ALOT of vomit. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewww. So I pick her up to bring her in front of the toilet and tell her to puke some more there. Her hands touch the toilet (yuck!) But nope, she turns around and vomits some more on the bathroom floor! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Needless to say, Louie and I were running around trying to clean up the vomit, clean HER up, wash her hands, take off the comforter and eventually the bed sheets. Your love for somone is never quite tested as much as when you need to clean up their vomit. Ugggh.

Louie called up Inday to help us handle everything. While we're putting on new sheets, Louie asks Inday if "Ok na ba yon?" in reference to the orientation of the bed sheet (i.e. long side vs short side on the mattress). So Chloe, who is now all cleaned up, wearing just her diaper, says, "Inday, ok na ba yon?" Very style-amo! Yikes!

So when your daughter throws up all the contents of her stomach, it means one more memorable ordeal with re-taking the medicine which was probably among the stuff she vomitted. Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh. Another tug of war!!! After 15 minutes and some rationalizing with her, Chloe finally drank it. Of course, we had to give in to her request for Iced tea, but what the heck!

Its now 1:10 am. And finally, finally, everything is quiet.

Hmmmm... yawn. My turn.

Night.
